The word Hadeeth originates from the root verb hadatha (حَدَثَ) which translates into various meanings through the verb scales including 'to occur', 'to narrate' and 'to initiate'. Hence, the noun Hadith (plural Ahaadith) means any of the following:

  • The speech (sayings) of Rasoolullah صلّى الله عليه و سلّم
  • The practice (actions) of Rasoolullah صلّى الله عليه و سلّم
  • The consent(permission granted) of Rasoolullah صلّى الله عليه و سلّم

The books of ahadith form an indispensable source of religious rulings.
