Madinah (Arabic: مدينه)

Madinah is a holy city in the country of Saudi Arabia, It was originally known as Yathrib, but later the city's name was changed to

  • Madinat un Nabi (Arabic: مدينة النبي)
    • Translation: city of the prophet or
  • Madinat ul Munawwarah (Arabic: مدينة المنورة)
    • Translation: Enlightened city,

while the short form Madinah simply means city.

Madinah's importance as a religious site derives from the final resting place of Prophet Muhammad inside Masjid e Nabawi or 'The Mosque of The Prophet' hence, it ranks as the second holiest city of Islam, after Makkah. The Prophet Muhammad migrated from Makkah to Madinah and lived in Madinah for about 10 years. When making the pilgrimage to Makkah, usually a trip to Madinah is also made.
