Sunnah

Sunnah or Sunnat ( Arabic: سنت ) literally means path or way, and therefore, the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم means the way of the prophet.

  • In Islam the word Sunnah refers to those religious actions that were instituted by the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم during the 23 years of his prophethood and which Muslims initially received through consensus of the sahabah رضي الله عنهم (companions of Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم), and further through generation-to-generation transmission.


  • The sunnah is the secondary source of Islamic law after the Qur'an.
